I think the root of both the religiosity and general political backwardness of U.S workers is structurally related to black oppression - the creation of a special colour-caste of workers, segregated to the bottom (last-hired, first-fired). This has the positive effect - for the bourgeoisie - of blocking workers class consciousness through the prevalence of racism among white workers, while at the same time depressing wages and union organizing.
